The City of De Smet was platted by CN&W Railroad in 1880 and was incorporated in 1883. It functions under the Aldermanic form of government with a seven-member council, consisting of a mayor who is elected at large and six aldermen. Two Aldermen are elected from each of the three city wards and each is elected for a two-year term.
The City Council meets in regular session on the second Wednesday of each month at 5:00 PM in City Hall. Special meetings are scheduled as needed throughout the year and are posted 24 hours in advance. The meetings are open to the public. Individuals or groups wishing to address the Council should contact City Hall in advance of the meeting date to schedule a time on the agenda.
